Sweet Baby Ray’s – IL

Driving back to the hotel during a business trip to Des Plaines, I spotted Sweet Baby Ray’s.  Being an East coast girl, I’m accustomed to seeing Ray’s BBQ sauce in Whole Foods, Wegman’s, and the like so I was thrilled to see the actual restaurant.
As soon as I parked the car and got out, the smell of smoky goodness wafted across the parking lot and I just knew I was in for some good ol’ down home bbq.  Unfortunately, I was a little let down when I got my pulled pork platter with their “famous” green chile mac n’ cheese.  The pulled pork was good but not great and had none of that smokiness I smelled in the parking lot.  I don’t know if they just smoke wood out back behind the restaurant for effect but I certainly didn’t taste any in the food.  The much-hyped mac n’ cheese was a little on the runny side and I got no heat from the tiny specks of green chile.  Turns out, the sweet potato fries were delicious and the highlight of the meal…go figure.
